Abstract

In March 1999, Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted Phase I archaeological survey and limited Phase II testing of the previously recorded archaeological site 9ER103. Site 9ER103 is located at the now closed Hutchins Landing Public Use Area, approximately 1.6 km (1 mile) south of Factory Creek, near Blakely, Georgia. This site is partially located on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District (USACE) property. Only the portion of the site on USACE property was investigated. This investigation was intended to ascertain the limits of the site deposits on USACE property and to determine the vertical and horizontal boundaries, as well as providing data on intrasite variability. The results of this investigation suggest that the portion of 9ER103 located on USACE property contains significant intact deposits. Numerous diagnostic artifacts were recovered from these excavations. Specifically, numerous of Swift Creek ceramics, exhibiting a variety of surface decorative styles, were collected. The expression of the Middle Swift Creek phase is not well understood along the Chattahoochee River and 9ER103 offers an opportunity to further explore the material culture of this time frame. Preserved organic material (e.g., charcoal, nutshell, and bone) is also relatively abundant and could provide valuable information on subsistence strategies and direct dating of the site deposits.
