Abstract

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc., conducted an intensive archaeological survey and testing of the proposed location for the Floydtown 115/25 kV substation in Miller County, Georgia. The proposed substation site encompasses approximately 5.2 acres. The site is located on the south side of Grimsley Bridge Road, approximately 300 m west of Floyd Road. The purpose of this investigation was to identify potentially significant cultural resources within the Area of Project Effect (APE). Archaeologists excavated shovel tests and examined available surface exposures within the proposed Floyd town substation site in January and February 2011. One site, 9MI165, was identified within the APE, necessitating the excavation of additional shovel tests at 15 m intervals and two 1-x-2-m test units. Shovel test data and test unit data indicate site 9Mi165 is unlikely to have significant research potential. Site 9MI165 is recommended not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), and does not warrant further management consideration.
