Abstract

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc. Conducted a phase one archaeological survey for the proposed expansion of the Sugar Creek Substation in Telfair County, Georgia. The proposed substation will be located south of McRae, Georgia (Figure 1). It is situated on the northwest side of U.S. Highways 280 and 441. The Area of Potential Effect (APE) consists of approximately three acres. The APE is on a ridge approximately 500 meters from Sugar Creek. There is existing electrical infrastructure within the APE (transmission line and fenced Substation). Previous land use and construction of the current substation has disturbed the APE exposing patches of bare ground. Figures 2 and 3 illustrate the conditions at the APE.
