Abstract

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc. conducted a phase one archaeological survey for the proposed Holt Substation in Irwin County, Georgia. The proposed substation will be located 13 km (eight miles) east of Ocilla, Georgia (Figure 1). It is situated on the south side of the existing Douglas - Lake Beatrice Transmission Line and east of Osierfield Road. The Area of Potential Effect (APE) consists of approximately 11 acres. Most of the APE is planted with pines; however, within the transmission line easement there was excellent surface exposure. The APE is situated on the top of a broad ridge top drained by Satilla Creek on the west and Hunters Creek on the east. It is over a kilometer from the APE to either of these waterways. Figures 2 and 3 illustrate the conditions at the time of the survey.
