Abstract

The archeological investigations in the Soque Watershed of Habersham County, Georgia, were initiated by the USDA, Soil Conservation Service by Purchase Order 849 - GA-SCS - 76, dated May 3 , 1976. This purchase order was later revised and reissued December 9, 1976 as 849 - GA - SCS - 76 (SUB I ). A second revision by telephone was made on March 15, 1977. Originally the Soque Watershed project was divided into three phases of work as follows:Phase I - Site Nos . 36 & 42; Phase II - Sites Nos . 8 & 45; Phase III -Sites Nos . 41 -R, 44 , & S Channel. The final revision, after all deletions, was: Phase I - Site Nos . 36 & 42; Phase II - Site No . 44. Phase I was completed by Marvin T. Smith and reported to the Soil Conservation Service on August 16, 1976 , the text of which is made Appendix A of this report. Problems arising from being unable to obtain permission from various property owners caused a further delay in completion of all surveys. A second delay was caused by a project archeologist, a consultant to the Archeological Survey of Cobb - Fulton Counties, who refused to enter lands belonging to the US Forestry Service without a permit. Letters of agreement were exchanged between the Soil Conservation Service and the Forestry Service and the survey continued with a regular staff archeologist. All pertinent correspondence is attached to this report in chronological order as Appendix B. A report of intensive investigation of 9-Hm- 31, a site found in Site No . 36 , will be submitted under separate cover at a later date.
