Phase I Archaeological Survey of a 90 Acre Tract in Rome Floyd County, Georgia

Report Number
7073
Year of Publication
1992
Abstract

The results of an intensive archaeological of the Rome 90-acre tract are presented in this report. Fieldwork in the tract was conducted on June 29 and July 1, 2, and 5, 1999. No previously recorded archaeological sites are located within the study tract. One new site, 9FL414, was discovered by the survey. Soils in the across the study tract have been impacted by historic farming as well as tree clearing a decade ago and similar clearing more recently. This disturbance has destroyed the majority of Site 9FL414 midden deposits; however, two areas still contain intact soils. These portions of the site are potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. If development of the Rome 90 acre tract will impact this portion of the site, Phase II testing is recommended to further clarify their National Register standing. It is our understanding, however, that both areas will be preserved in place.
