Abstract

Georgia Power Company has been issued a Department of the Army Permit (copy attached) pursuant to Section 404(a) of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972, PL 92-500, for placement of approximately 8 million cubic yards of dredged material in five deposition areas in Oconee River and adjacent wetlands to construct a tailrace for Wallace Dam. The combined acreage of the deposition areas is approximately 400 acres. In 1974 and 1975 the University of Georgia conducted an archaeological survey of the entire Wallace Dam project as provided for in the Federal Power Commission license XProject No. 2413). Approximately 250 archaeological sites were identified of which one was in the tailrace area at the upstream end of deposition area #1. An additional archaeological survey (Report dated 25 March 1977, copy attached) was conducted in the tailrace project area and one additional site was located. The two areas are similar and are sma~l occupation sites of the Lamar Phase of the Late Mississippian period (A.D. 1300-1600).
