Abstract

Project STP-5601(1) would construct a two lane connector road on new location between River Street and US 41/SR 3 in Calhoun, Georgia. The proposed project would begin on River Street, just south of Oak Street. Traveling in a northeasterly direction, the road would bridge over the CSX Railroad and Elm Street, where it would tie up with Lumber Street. The proposed project would terminate at the Lumber Street/US 41/SR 3 intersection. The existing right-of-way varies between 25 and 50 feet. The required right-of-way would vary between 70 to 200 feet. The total length of the project is .38 mil. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted along the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accord~ce with "GDOT/FHW A Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or potentially eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.".
