Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the approximately 360 acre Creekside Golf and Country Club tract between January 30 and February 5, 1998. The tract lies in east central Paulding County and is a part of the city of Hiram. Of the 360 acres comprising the tract, approximately 120 acres are in wetlands. Additional acreage has been disturbed by previous construction of a nine hole golf course as well as housing developments and recent construction of nine additional holes for the course. No previously recorded archaeological sites are located within the study tract. The survey found two isolated finds and one site 9Pa67. IF 1 consists of three quartz flakes, a chert flake and a chalcedony projectile point fragment, probably dating to the Early Archaic. IF 2 consists of a single quartz biface, possibly also a projectile point fragment. Site 9Pa67 contained 18 quartz flakes, one chalcedony shatter, and one chalcedony flake. The isolates and site 9Pa67 do not qualify for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and no further archaeological study of site 9Pa67 or the Creekside Golf and Country Club tract is recommended.
