Abstract

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc., conducted an intensive archaeological survey of the proposed location for the Box Springs Substation in Talbot County, Georgia. The proposed substation site encompasses 8.163 acres. The site is located on the southwest corner of the intersection of US Highway 80 and Sizemore Road. The purpose of this investigation was to identify potentially significant cultural resources within the Area of Potential Effect (APE). Archaeologists excavated shovel tests and examined available surface exposures within the proposed Box Springs substation site on May 4 and May 5, 2011. Two sites, 9Ta172 and 9Ta173, were identified within the APE. Shovel test data indicate sites 9Ta172 and 9Ta173 are unlikely to have significant research potential. Sites 9Ta172 and 9Ta173 are recommended not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), and do not warrant further management consideration.
