Abstract

On May 2 and 3, 2012, Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., conducted a Phase I archeological survey of approximately 10.64 acres on the northern outskirts of the small town of Cotton, in Mitchell County, Georgia (Figure 1). Two tracts were surveyed. The first, totaling about 3.71 acres, is the location of a proposed expansion of the existing Cotton 46/25 kV Substation, situated on the northeast side of Stagecoach Road. In addition to the proposed substation tract, we surveyed 6.93 acres on the opposite side of Stagecoach Road where a minor realignment of the Cotton 46 kV transmission line may occur. No archeological sites exist within the surveyed tracts, but two "occurrences" were found, consisting of two small chert flakes that date to some unknown prehistoric period. We conclude that construction of a new substation and re-routing the transmission line will have no effect to any significant archeological remains.
