Archaeological Assessment of Project MLP-894(2), Peach County

Project MLP-894(2) is Phase II of the new access road for Fort Valley State College between SR 49 and State College Drive. The project will begin at SR 49 approximately 2625 feet south of River Road and proceed southeasterly on new location, crossing the Norfolk Southern Railroad at-grade and ending on State College Drive at the beginning point of Phase I of MLP-894(1), which has already been constructed. The proposed typical section will consist of two 12-foot travel lanes with 10-foot grassed shoulders. The project is a total of0.55 miles (2887 feet). Required right-of-way varies from 300 feet for most of the project to 1000 feet for a stream channelization area near the southern Phase II terminus. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
