GDOT Archaeological Assessment In-House Survey Report GDOT Project: State Route (SR) 74 at Norfolk Southern #718831X in Senoia- 3rd Addendum

Abstract

The proposed project would replace the SR 74 bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad (ID #718831X), located approximately 0.22 miles northeast of the intersection of SR 74 and SR 16 in eastern Coweta County. The existing typical section of SR 74 consists of two 12-foot travel lanes and a two-foot curb and gutter on each side. The existing right-of-way (ROW) is approximately 130 feet in width and approximately 200 feet at the bridge. The project will include a typical urban section consisting of two 12-foot travel lanes with a two-and-a-half-foot curb and gutter, and a 10-foot multiuse trail. The total project length is approximately 0.35 mile. Proposed easements and/or ROW width is expected to vary up to a maximum of approximately 240 feet in width along the corridor. There are no previously recorded sites within a 1-km radius of the project area.

There have been three previous surveys of this project prior to this reevaluation. In 2002, the project was originally surveyed by Brockington and Associates, Inc. (Will and Gardner 2002). Brockington surveyed an area described as follows: A corridor extending approximately 1,300 ft. north of the railroad tracks and extending approximately 1,300 ft. south of the railroad tracks. The corridor runs parallel to SR 74 and its width is approximately 112 feet. During this survey, Brockington and Associates found no significant archaeological resources (in fact, no resources), and they recommended archaeological clearance, instead finding a considerable amount of surface and subsurface soil disturbance has occurred within the project boundaries due to the construction of SR 74, commercial development, and the bridge ... " (Will and Gardner 2002:17). In 2006, Brockington and Associates returned to the project area to do an addendum (Sweeney 2006). At this time, the APE for the project was defined as being 1627 feet long and 150 feet wide along SR 74. The area investigated during the reevaluation survey consisted of a 1580 by 100 foot corridor west of SR 74, north and south of where it crosses the Southern Railroad. A GDOT Short Form for Negative Findings was filed as a result of this survey. In 2015, the project was surveyed by Pamela Baughman (Baughman 2015); the area investigated during this addendum was defined as representing the project as being skewed approximately 400' additional feet north of the railroad as compared to previous project areas, and the area surveyed included an additional 100' in width in the northwest section of the project area. One isolated find was recorded during the course of this survey; this find was recorded in the highly disturbed northeastern end of the project.
