Abstract

This project involves the replacement of Bridge 147-5043-0 that carries Shoal Creek Road over Shoal Creek in Hart County, Georgia, located 4.4 miles east of Lavonia, Georgia (Attachment 1 ). The existing bridge, built in 1962, is no longer structurally sufficient and needs to be replaced. This project is part of the GDOT Low Impact Bridge Program (LIBP). Designs for the new bridge were not yet available at the time of the archaeological survey. The existing right-of-way (ROW) measures 18 meters (60ft.) from the centerline. The bridge measures 29.2 meters (95.8 ft.) in length. No temporary roadways or bridges were proposed for this project.

The APE for this project includes the footprint in which construction will take place. The guidelines in the LIBP Manual state that for projects included in the program, the APE is to extend 91 meters (300ft.) from each end of the existing bridge along the roadway, resulting in a total APE length of 211 .2 meters (695.8 ft. ). The width of the APE is the width of the existing ROW on either side of the bridge. The LIBP waives the requirement for an Extended Survey Corridor (ESC).

No previously recorded sites were located within one kilometer (0.6 mi.) of the APE. No previous surveys were conducted within one kilometer (0.6 mi.) of the APE.
