Abstract

The proposed project would replace the existing substandard bridge on County Road (CR) 86/Cat Gap Road over the Tallulah River, 7.1 miles northwest of Tiger in Rabun County, Georgia. The project begins 850 feet east of the intersection of CR 86/Cat Gap Road and Garrett Lane and ends approximately 525 feet northeast of the bridge crossing at Tallulah River for a total project length of 920 feet. The existing bridge is 45 feet in total length, and consists of 2 lanes, 12 feet wide with a deck width of 25 feet. The proposed bridge would be approximately 70 feet in total length, and consist of 2 lanes, 12 feet in length with 2 foot paved shoulders and a deck width of 31 feet 3 inches. The existing right-of-way (ROW) is 30 feet centered along the roadway; the proposed ROW will be 50 feet. The proposed bridge will be constructed on a shifted alignment. An off-site detour will not be needed during construction. The existing bridge and approaches will be utilized to keep traffic open during construction of the new bridge and alignment.

There are no previously recorded sites within 1 kilometer of the project APE, though two sites are just outside the 1 kilometer boundary. Site 9RA397 is an abandoned mine located 1.14 kilometers east-northeast of the APE and site 9RA402, Crossroads School, is located 1.06 km west-southwest of the APE. Both sites have an unknown eligibility for National Register of Historic Placed (NRHP) consideration. No previous surveys intersect with project area.
