Abstract

The proposed project would consist of the replacement of the Greenville Street

Bridge (GDOT bridge ID 285-0034-0) over the CSX Transportation Railroad in east LaGrange, Troup

County, Georgia (Figure 1). The existing bridge was constructed in 1937 and currently has a sufficiency rating of6.28 using a design load ofH-15, which consists of a two-axle truck with a gross vehicle weight of 15 tons. The existing facility consists of two 10-foot travel lanes, with a 2-foot grass strip and 4-foot sidewalk on the west approach and a 5-foot grassed shoulder on the east approach. The existing structure

is an 18-span steel stringer overpass located over the CSX Transportation Railroad. Clear roadway width

between curbs is approximately 32 feet. The vertical clearance under the existing bridge is 22 feet 1 inch,

which is approximately 1 foot less than desired. The lateral clearance is 8 feet 8 inches, which is approximately 9 feet less than desired. The existing bridge measures approximately 510 feet in length.

The proposed replacement structure would provide two 14-foot travel lanes and 5.5-foot sidewalks and 14.5-inch parapets on both sides of the roadway. The total bridge width. including railings would be approximately 41 feet 5 inches. Estimated length of the replacement structure would be 426 feet, consisting of seven spans of pre-stressed concrete (PSC) beams. It would be designed to meet the 23- foot vertical under clearance required by the railroad. Intermediate bents would be reinforced concrete with or without crashwalls as needed. The end bents would be placed behind mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls. The parapets on either side of the bridge would be a special design concrete parapet to match the appearance of the railing on the existing bridge. Total bridge length would be approximately 426 feet. Total project length would be approximately 1,316 feet.

No previously recorded archaeological sites are located within 1 km of the project area (Figure 4). The historic resources surveys for the project identified the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligible Dunson Mill Historic District within the project APE (Norwood 2005). The district is comprised of an early-twentieth century mill, associated mill housing, and associated community resources. The Dunson Mill Historic District was recommended eligible for the NRHP under Criteria A and C and was determined to possess significance in the areas of community planning/development and architecture. No archaeological resources were identified during this survey.

Site 9TP1082 was recorded on January 27, 2016 during an archaeological survey for Georgia

Department of Transportation (GDOT) project BRSTLB-2932-00(00 1), PI 343455 in Troup County,

Georgia. The site is located within a vacant parcel at the corner of Paxton Street and Robertson Street in

LaGrange. The parcel containing the site is within the proposed project's APE and within the Dunson

Mill Historic District (Figure 8). Site 9TP 1082 consists of an artifact scatter associated with a razed

historic house that was once part of the Dunson Mill village.
