Abstract

The purpose of this report is to provide an overview of the nature, location, disposition, and recommendations for known and probable significant archaeological resources at both the Frederica and Cannon's Point tracts, on St. Simons Island, Georgia. Following a brief cultural overview of the prehistory and history of the Georgia Coast, focusing specifically on St. Simons Island, a summary of the previous archaeological and physical anthropological work which occurred at either tract will be provided. The known interpretations, significance, and level of investigations at each recorded site will be indicated. Finally, a series of recommendations will be made that point toward the next necessary, or suggested, steps to protect or avoid impact to these resources, or at least to mitigate adverse effects. This includes a summary of the protection measures or covenants which are already in place.

Since we do not have a legal description of the portions of the Frederica and Cannon's Point Tracts which have been acquired by Wachovia-Wells Fargo, the boundaries provided herein reflect the tracts as they were when Brockington and Associates, Inc. first became involved in the assessment of their archaeological resources (Figure 1). That said, it is possible that some resources will be discussed which currently fall outside of the Wachovia-Wells Fargo Frederica or Cannon's Point Tract boundaries.
