Abstract

A Phase I cultural resource survey was conducted for a proposed 116 acre expansion of the Cherokee County Airport, Cherokee County, Georgia between February 19 and 21, 1992. The proposed airport expansion project will result in the lengthening and widening of existing Runway 4-22 and its associated taxiway, as well as the construction of new aprons and other related facilities, and new approaches at either end of the runway. A thorough combined surface and subsurface inspection provided adequate survey coverage of the entire project area. Two new archaeological sites, 9CK724 and 9CK725, and one isolated find were recorded during the field investigations. 9CK724 appears to contain remains associated with Early Archaic and Middle Archaic occupations. Although no diagnostic materials were recovered from 9CK725, it is strongly suspected that it also was occupied during a similar range of time as 9CK724. Two small areas of 9CK724 may contain potentially intact significant remains. However, no potentially intact remains are present at 9CK725 as that site has already been adversely effected by construction of Runway 422. Since potentially intact remains may be present at 9CK724, Garrow & Associates, Inc. has recommended that limited Phase II testing investigations be undertaken to collect enough information to allow a determination of the site's potential eligibility (or ineligibility) for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
