Abstract

Constructed in 1954, Building 02763, a central heating plant, is individually eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and a contributing element to Fort Benning's Main Post Historic District. The building is significant under Criterion C at the state level for its association with Stevens & Wilkinson Architects Engineers of Atlanta, Georgia and as an early building with glass-curtain wall construction in Georgia.

Panamerican Consultants, Inc. (PCI), under contract with Fort Benning Military Reservation completed a Level II Historic American Building Survey (HABS) to mitigate the adverse effects of pending renovation or demolition activities of Building 02763 due to Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) transformation. In either instance, the external smoke stack is scheduled for demolition. As the building is considered individually eligible for listing in the NRHP and plans for renovation or demolition are unavoidable, a HABS Level II recordation of Building 02763 was initiated to mitigate the potential adverse effects. Under the direction of the cultural resources staff of the Environmental Programs Management Branch (EPMB), PCI submits the following documentation to fulfill the necessary recordation requirements; large format photographs with negatives, color slides, topographic map, and written narrative that meet the standards set forth by the National Park Service HABS guidelines as required by the Georgia State Historic Preservation Office (GASHPO).
