Cultural Resources Survey of Alternative H, Jimmy Deloach Parkway, Chatham County, Georgia

From 9 March to 13 March 1992, archaeologists from Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted an archaeological survey of the 8.3 mile Alternative H of the Jimmy DeLoach Parkway in Chatham County, Georgia. The survey was conducted under contract with Thomas and Hutton Engineering, Inc., of Savannah, Georgia. The purpose of the project was to locate any archaeological resources which might be impacted by the proposed right of way corridor, determine their significance with regard to the National Register of Historic Places as per 36CFR60.4, and to determine the effect the proposed highway construction may have on these resources. A total of seven cultural resources were encountered during the survey. Two of the resources were archaeological sites (9CH785 and 9CH786) while five were isolated artifact occurrences. One isolated occurrence represented prehistoric utilization of the area. The remainder of the resources were historic. Site 9CH785 appears to be the remains of a house which dates to the nineteenth and early twentieth century, and may be associated with the Potter Plantation. Site 9CH786 also represents a house which dates to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Both of the sites are badly disturbed. None of the seven cultural resources encountered during the survey are considered eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. As such, no adverse effects will be imposed upon the resources by the proposed highway construction. No further management consideration is recommended.
