Abstract

The proposed project would replace the existing bridge on SR 166 over Big Indian Creek approximately 1.9 miles west of Bowdon, Carroll County, Georgia. The existing bridge is 360 feet long and 50.30 feet wide, with two 12-foot lanes with 11 foot shoulders, and a right-of-way (ROW) of 80 to 100 feet. The proposed bridge would be 365 feet long and 43 feet and 3 inches wide, with two 12-foot travel lanes with 8 foot shoulders and a ROW of 80 to 160 feet. The design speed would remain 55 mph.

There were no design plans at the time of survey, thus the survey area for the proposed project includes all areas within an Environmental Survey Boundary (ESB). The ESB measures approximately 3,115 feet in length, 420 feet in width, and is designed specifically to encompass all areas of possible/foreseeable ground disturbance as a result of the current project. When design is complete, the project APE will likely be smaller than the ESB that is shown.

There were no previously recorded sites within a 1-kilometer radius around the survey area. One previous survey (Quirk 2015, GASF Report No. 5539) intersected with the eastern end of the survey area, but had negative findings for archaeological material. This survey was conducted by EPEI for the SR 166 bypass project.
