Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project F-5-5(9), Chatham Co., has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor.

Plans show that U.S. 80 in Pooler will be improved by relocating a section of U.S. 80 from approximately 350’ west of Arnold St. east to Parsons Ave. The new location will shift U.S. 80 south along the old Central of Georgia Railroad bed running just north of Collins St. With the exception of a short section between the Fire House and the Library, where required right-of-way is 48ft., required right-of-way will be 80 feet.

The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and agreed upon by the Federal Highway Administration, State Historic Preservation Officer and State Archaeologist. These guidelines outline general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.

No significant archaeological resources-were located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
