Abstract

On June 21, 1977 a survey of the Hamilton 201 wastewater treatment facility was completed in order to assess the impact of the proposed project upon cultural resources, as required by federal mandates implemented by 36 C.F.R. 800, "Procedures for the Protection of Historic and Cultural Properties." The survey, which required one-half day's work by one archaeologist, covered approximately two acres plus 1,000 feet of force main pipeline route.

The project area is located in the center of Harris County on the west edge of the town of Hamilton and bordering Palmetto Creek. Pine Mountain to the north and west and Oak Mountain one mile to the east both exhibit elevations to 1200 feet and steep slopes. The Chattahoochee River is located about twelve miles to the west. The immediate area around Hamilton is hilly ranging in elevation between 650 and .800 feet. Soils are dark red clay, usually rocky, except in floodplains. Vegetation at the pump station location was row crop and weedy second growth; along the pipeline route young pines have regenerated after logging within the past 20 years or so, and on the proposed treatment plant site pasture has been established. Locations of these three components are shown on the attached map.
