Assessment of Effects on Historic Properties Bona Allen House and John Quincy Allen House Bailey Development Tract Buford, Gwinnett County, Georgia

Abstract

Per a memorandum dated 29 January 2018, the U.S. Anny Corps of Engineers, Savannah District (US ACE) requested that an Assessment of Effects be prepared to determine if the Bona Allen House and/or the John Quincy Allen House might be visually affected by a proposed one to two-story residential development project on the nearby Bailey tract located in Buford, Georgia. Both of the subject properties are listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and are within the USACE-determined Area of Potential Effects [i.e., within I 00 meters (m) of the USACE permit area).

                The Bona Allen House is located at 395 East Main Street (Figure 1). This NRHP-listed property, including grounds, covers 5.8 acres and is bounded on the northwest by Main Street, on the southwest by Wilson Street, on the southwest by Tannery Street (a cobblestone street) and the Bailey tract, and on the east by the Bailey tract. The NRHP nomination form for this property is attached. The NRJ-1 P-1 is ted John Quincy Allen House is located at 345 East Main Street (Figure I). The house (including grounds) covers. 1.2 acres and is located in the center of the block bounded by Main Street, Wilson Street. East Moreno Street, and South Hill Street. The southeast comer of this property is located within approximately 40 m west of the Bailey tract cornering at Wilson Street/ Wilson Avenue. An associated historic "carriage house" outbuilding lies on the southeast property boundary on East Moreno Street within approximately 65 m west of the Bailey tract.
