Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BHS-1707(2), Towns Co., has been surveyed with respect to archaeological) resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor.

This is the replacement/widening of two bridges on S.R. 288 at Lake Chatuge. The first location, over Fodder Creek, will require 25 feet of additional right-of-way from the east side of S.R. 288 for a length of 600 feet. The remainder will be within existing R/W. The second location, over Wilson Cove/Hog Creek, will require 10 feet of additional right-of-way from the east side of S.R. 288 for a length of 300 feet. The remainder will be within existing R/W.

The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and agreed upon by the Federal Highway Administration, State Historic Preservation Officer and State Archaeologist. These guidelines outline general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.

No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
