Abstract

This report documents archival research and archeological monitoring conducted for the installation of a new, larger entrance sign for the university located at the comer of Broad and Jackson Streets on the North Campus of the University of Georgia (Figure 1). This project was one of the first to be conducted by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. (SAS) for UGA and reliable lines of communication had yet to be established between all concerned parties (SAS, The Office of University Architects, the Facilities Management Department, and contractors and subcontractors hired by UGA). SAS was under the mistaken impression that the Facilities

Maintenance Sign Division would perform the work to replace the sign. Contact was made with the Facilities Management Sign Department on June 6, asking them to inform SAS when work was to begin on the sign replacement project. As it turned out the Sign Department's role in the job was simply to remove the old sign, and a contractor was to install the new masonry one. The Sign Department was unaware of the contractor's schedule and failed to notify SAS that the contractors had begun work on the sign project. Scott Messer informed SAS on June 12 that work had begun on the sign project.
