Abstract

An intensive cultural resources survey was conducted at a 4 ha (10 ac) substation and along a 1.6 km (1 mi) length of 27 m (90 It) wide transmission line proposed for the eastern portion of Coweta County. Surface inspection and the excavation of 76 shovel tests (mostly on 30 m intervals) led to the discovery of two archeological sites and one isolated artifact occurrence. Both sites, 9CW106 and 9CW107, are late nineteenth to mid-twentieth century house sites with partial remains of foundations and, for the former site, some standing outbuildings. We recommend that neither the sites, nor an artifact occurrence (two fragments of asbestos tile in a shovel test), are eligible to the National Register of Historic Places. No standing historic structures are within view of the proposed substation and transmission line. Thus it is the opinion of the principal investigator that no cultural resources will be impacted and that, in regard to cultural resources, the project be given clearance to proceed.
