Abstract

Project BRF-005-5(15), Chatham County would consist of the replacement of the Bay Street Viaduct on U.S . 17/S.R. 25 Alternate (Bay Street) in Savannah over the Central of Georgia railroad tracks. Project limits would extend from East Lathrop Avenue to Fahm Street (see Figure 2). The existing bridge, measuring 2265 feet by 43 feet and carrying three 10-foot travel lanes, would be replaced with a new structure. The new bridge would measure 2257 feet by 77 feet and would carry five 12-foot travel lanes. Bridge approaches would also be reconstructed. Staged construction would be used to build the new bridge. The existing structure would be used as a detour while the southern half of the new bridge is completed. After traffic is redirected onto the new facility, the existing structure would be demolished to allow for construction of the northern portion of the proposed bridge. Access from Bay Street to the area beneath the bridge would be eliminated. The existing right-of-way of eighty-eight feet would be supplemented by an additional thirty feet of right-of-way on the southern side of the bridge to allow for project implementation. Total project length is 0.9 miles.
