Abstract

"In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, and the Georgia Environmental Policy Act of 1991, project PR-8530(099), Early County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) . The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. Project PR-8530(099) involves the improvement of a portion of CR 168/ Airline Street as well as the intersection of CR 168 and SR 216 in Early County. Along CR 168, the project would begin at the intersection of SR 216 and would end at the intersection of Maxwell Street. CR 168 would be widened approximately 0. 7 m (2. 3 ft) on each side then the entire roadway would be leveled and resurfaced. The existing right-of-way is approximately 15. 2 m (50 ft) . Additional required right-of-way would be approximately 1.5 m (4.9 ft) on each side of CR 168 . At the intersection, a right turn lane would be added from SR 216 onto CR 168 and the radius would be enlarged on the northwest quadrant. The existing right-of-way is approximately 24.4 m (80 ft). Additional right-of-way would be required in the northeastern quadrant of the intersection measuring 6.1 m x 54.9 m (20 . 0 ft x 180.1 ft). An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed right-of-way was conducted for the entire length of project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above."
