Abstract

"In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project STP-1618 {4), Haralson County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible f or inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places

(NRHP) . The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project’s area of potential environmental effect.

The proposed project would consist of the widening and reconstruction of Cashtown Road/Vinson Mountain Road east of the city of Bremen, Georgia. The proposed project would begin at SR 8/US 78 and extend northerly on new location for a distance of approximately 1066 m {3500 ft.) before tying into Cashtown Road/Vinson Mountain Road near CR 51/Temple Road. The proposed project would then extend northerly along Cashtown Road/Vinson Mountain Road to CR 346/Morgan Road. The existing right-of- way for Cashtown Road/Vinson Mountain Road varies from approximately 15 m to 25 m (49.2 ft. ~ to 82.02 ft.) . The proposed required right-of-way would vary from approximately 40 m to 135 m {130 ft. to 445 ft.) . The total proposed project length would be approximately 8 .6 krn {5 .36 mi). An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed right-of-way was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey {Level III) was conducted in accordance with " GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.

No existing or eligible archaeological resources were located within the project ' s area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above."
