Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, GDOT Project EDS-441(16), the construction of a bypass and interchange west of Watkinsville in Oconee County, Georgia, was surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. As part of the original proposed project approximately 15 acres would have been required from the USDA Southern Piedmont Research Station (Entorf 1990). Due to design changes, approximately 35 acres of additional land will be required from the Research Station. An archaeological survey of the additional land was required under the provisions of the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979. A permit for such a survey was acquired on March 2, 1992 (ARPA Permit No. 57-43YK-2-015); the survey was conducted on March 9, 1992. The archaeological survey consisted of an intensive pedestrian survey with limited subsurface testing where appropriate. The goals of this survey were to locate, document, and assess the significant resources within the proposed construction limits of the project corridors of the additional land acquired from the USDA-ARS property. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect.
