Abstract

"In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto , STP-209- 1(6) , Fulton/ Fayette Counties has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) . The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project’s area of potential environmental effect. The original proposed project consists of the widening of SR 74 to add deceleration/ acceleration lanes to eight intersections in the cities of Tyrone and Peachtree City. These intersections include: Landrum/Milam Road, Sandy Creek Road, Jenkins Road/Peggy Lane, Tyrone Road, Dogwood Trail, Crabapple/Peachtree Parkway, Senoia Road, and Wisdom Road. The existing right-of- way on SR 74 varies from approximately 45.7 to 61m (150 to 200 ft.). The additional required right-of- way is approximately 4.6m (15ft.). An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted along the project corridor. The concept has now been revised at two of the eight intersections on SR 74. The Senoia Road intersection was incorrectly survey e d and depicted on the original plans; therefore, this intersection was surveyed as though it was added to the project. Existing right - of-way a t Senoia Road varies from approximately 46 m to 61 m (150ft to 200ft). The additional required right - of-way would be approximately 4 m (13.1ft) for a distance of approximately 258 m (846ft) from the intersection. The Jenkins Road intersection includes two changes. The deceleration lanes originally proposed for the southeast corner of Peggy Lane has been deleted from the current concept. Also, a deceleration would be added to the north side of Jenkins Road. The additional required right-of- way would be approximately 3m (10ft) for a distance of 50 m (164ft) from the intersection . An archaeological survey consistent with the current project description was conducted for the revised areas. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project’s area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above."
