Abstract

"In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project STP-2812 (8), Haralson County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources , especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect.

The proposed project would add passing lanes at two sites on US 78/SR 8 in Haralson County. Symmetrical widening on the first passing lane would begin on US 78 /SR 8 at mile post 11.0 then continue easterly to an end point at mile post 14.9. Symmetrical widening on the second passing lane would begin on US 78/SR 8 at mile post 15 .8 then continue easterly to an end point at mile post 17 .3. The existing right-of-way on US 78/SR 8 is approximately 30.4 meters (100 feet), while the proposed additional required right-of-way for both passing lane sites will be approximately 7.5 meters (25 feet). An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights- of-way was conducted for the entire 3.86 kilometer (2.4 mile) project corridor.
