Abstract

This report documents the results of the Phase I cultural resources survey performed on the 5.51 acre area to be impacted by the construction of the proposed Sandy Plains 115/12 kV Substation. This substation is to be constructed off of Scufflegrit Road approximately 1,300 feet west of Sandy Plains Road, Cobb County, Georgia. The Phase I investigations were conducted on the project area by the primary author, Laura B. Reidy, and Susan E. Smith on March 11 and March 17,1993. The survey area was examined by a combination of a pedestrian survey and the excavation of subsurface shovel tests. Areas exhibiting greater than 25 percent surface visibility were surface inspected for cultural remains. Visually inspected areas occurred primarily along the Scufflegrit Road easement and extended approximately 30 m west of Scufflegrit Road. All other portions of the project area where surface visibility was less than 25 percent were examined with subsurface shovel test pits excavated to subsoil and screened through 1/4 inch hardware mesh. The majority of the project area was covered by secondary growth such as pines, briers, and brush; however, mature stands of softwood are present on a slightly sloping hillside in the eastern portion of the property and along the western property boundary. Several farm roads traverse the property from the north, south, and east. Two separate artifact concentrations were identified within the project area. Site 9C0347 consists of a small scatter of prehistoric lithic debitage and was located in the southwestern corner of the property. Isolated Find #1 was identified on a knoll in the southeastern portion of the project area and contained one piece of lithic debitage and one historic ceramic sherd. Intact soil profiles were not identified during the Phase I survey and the literature and records search did not reveal the presence of historic structures previously located on the property. This report recommends that site 9C0347 and Isolated Find #1 be considered ineligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and that no further cultural resource investigations be conducted in this study area prior to the proposed construction.
