Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project STP-1833(12), Twiggs and Wilkinson Counties, have been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Pl aces (NRHP). The purpose of these surveys was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect.

The proposed project would construct three passing Janes along SR 18 in Twiggs and Jefferson Counties. Site 1 is a westbound passing Jane that begins at Mile Post (MP) 3.6 and ends at MP 2.0 in Twiggs County. Site 2 is an eastbound passing lane that begins at MP 2.0 and ends at MP 0.9 in Twiggs County. Site 3 is an eastbound passing lane that begins at MP 7.0 and ends at MP 8.5 in Wilkinson County. Existing right-of-way on SR 18 varies from 80 to 100 feet. The proposed right-of-way for SR 18 is 80 feet from the centerline on the side of the passing Jane and 70 feet from center line on the side without the passing lane. The total project length is 4.2 miles.
