Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, and the Georgia Environmental Policy Act of 1991, project TSAP-4(130), Jefferson County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) . The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect.

Project TSAP-4(130) involves intersection improvements at the intersections of SR 4/US 1 and CR 138 and SR 296 and CR 138 in Jefferson County. Improvements would include adding left turn bays and acceleration/ deceleration lanes. Existing rights-of-way are as follows: along CR 138 is approximately 24.4 m (80ft), SR 296 is approximately 30.5 m (100ft), and SR 4 is approximately 45.7 m (150ft). The additional required right-of-way at the intersection of SR 4 and CR 138 would be approximately 4.57 m (15ft) on the south side of CR 138 only. The additional required right-of-way at the SR 296 and CR 138 intersection would be approximately 6.096 m (20ft) in the southeastern and northeastern quadrants. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was conducted for the entire length of both project corridors.
