Abstract

Project MR- 9267 (1) Dekalb County would widen and reconstruct New Peachtree Road from Interstate 285 to Oakcliff Road. The immediate area near a small cemetery at the intersection of New Peachtree Road and Winters Chapel Road was examined for unmarked gravesites within the required ROW. An archaeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/ FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Archaeologist in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred with by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/ scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources or unmarked gravesites were identified within the proposed project corridor in the area of the cemetery lot.
