Abstract

The Unicoi Turnpike extends from South Carolina to Tennessee by way of Georgia and North Carolina, and represents a significant historic resource. Beginning as a trail used by American Indians, it later became one of the earliest roads over the Blue Ridge Mountains. The purpose of the present report is threefold: document and evaluate the historic significance of the road in Georgia; document a sample of the existing sections of road on National Forest land; and asses the eligibility of this resource for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Based on this research, it is the Forest's opinion that the sections of the Unicoi Turnpike located on National Forest land are eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places under criteria "a", "c", and "d".
