Abstract

A metal detector survey and limited excavation in the vicinity of a fieldstone chimney at Jarrell Plantation State Historic Site in Jones County, Georgia confirmed the presence of Plantation Period midden deposits in a small area immediately surrounding the chimney. Although no outbuilding remains were located during the course of the survey, the distribution of Plantation Period (Late 19th to Early 20th Centuries) hand forged iron artifacts and related itches within a one hundred foot perimeter of the site was mapped. The proposed construction of the new Interpretive Center and ancillary facilities was determined to have no adverse effect upon the archaeological resources present at the Plantation.
