Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BRZLB-207(6), Monroe County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. The bride over Champion Creek on Co. Rd. #201 (Edwards Rd.) will be replaced and the approaches improved. The project extends from 300’ south of the creek to just south of Co. Rd. #202, a total distance of approximately 1300’. Minor shifts in alignment (50’ or less) will straighten curves in the approaches on each side of the creek, with the proposed bridge being placed approximately 45’ north of the existing structure. Along corridor is required for the length of the project. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general sur vey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project w1ll have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that descried above.
