Abstract

An intensive cultural resources survey was conducted on two tracts that are alternative locations for a proposed small electrical substation in southwest Echols County. Tract 1 is 1.0 ha (2.6 ac) and tract 2 is 1.4 ha (3.5 ac) in size. Both are located on nearly level, low-lying land with no physiographic features. They are largely wooded, except that tract 1 is bisected by a cleared transmission line corridor. The tracts were archeologically surveyed February 16, 1993 by the author, who surface inspected both areas then excavated nine shovel tests on tract 1 and thirteen on tract 2. No archeological sites were detected on either tract. One artifact, a modern piece of clear bottle glass, was recovered from one shovel test in tract 2. No structures that could be 50 years old are within view of either tract. Thus, in regard to cultural resources, the principal investigator recommends that since no cultural resources are present at either tract, no resources could be impacted by the construction of the substation. Both tracts are recommended clear for construction.
