Abstract

The proposed project would replace the State Route (SR) 53 westbound bridge over the Chattahoochee River, Lake Lanier, approximately 4.5 miles west of Gainesville, Georgia. The proposed bridge would be 36 feet wide, with a 4-foot wide inside shoulder. The bridge would have two 12-foot travel lanes, and an 8-foot wide outside shoulder. The westbound roadway approaching the bridge would have two 12-foot travel lanes, a 6-foot inside shoulder, and a I 0- foot outside shoulder. The project is approximately .61 mile long. The design speed is 55 miles per hour (mph), with a posted design speed of 45 mph. The proposed bridge centerline would be shifted approximately 45 feet to the north, and would be between 2 and 10 feet higher than the existing bridge. An easement totaling approximately 960 square feet would be needed for construction of a wall. The remainder of the project would be constructed within existing right-of-way and easement. An ESB was surveyed for the current project, measuring approximately 152 meters in width by 1,085 meter in length, and incorporating all the areas needed to complete the design as well as a buffer to account for potential changes as the design progresses.
