Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project EDS-35(35), Thomas County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect.

The proposed project would widen West Thomasville Bypass, US 319/SR 35, from the intersection of the Tallahassee Highway (US 319/ SR 35) south of Thomasville to US 84/SR 38 northwest of Thomasville.

The proposed construction would widen the two-lane roadway to four Janes. The project corridor was originally surveyed to accommodate a four-lane roadway, on 200 feet of right-of-way, in 1986 by GDOT archaeologist D. Rotenstein for project F-033-1 (37). This widening project would require additional right-of-way at three locations along the project corridor. At the intersection with Campbell Street in the northwest and northeast quadrants, an additional 15 feet of right-of-way would be required for a length of approximately 500 feet. At the intersection of Cairo Road a small amount of additional right-of-way would be required for a miter in the northwest quadrant. At the intersection with US 84/SR 38, to the east of US 319/ SR 35 an additional 25 feet to 200 feet of right-of-way would be required for approximately 1000 feet.
