Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BHF-051 -1 (7), Madison County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and agreed upon by the Federal Highway Administration, State Historic Preservation Officer and State Archaeologist. These guidelines outline general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. Georgia DOT project BHF-051-1(7) in Madison and Elbert Counties is an in place bridge replacement project on S.R.72 over the Broad River. Because the project is in-place no new areas will be impacted. Only those areas which have been disturbed by the construction of the existing bridge will be affected. For this reason, no archaeological field inspection is necessary and the archaeological resources of the State will not be affected.
