Archaeological Assessment of Project M-4710, Tift County

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project M-4710, Tift County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor.

Plans indicate that Eight Street (Whiddon Mill Road) will be widened to accommodate turning lanes. An additional 20 feet of right-of-way will be required south of the existing row from approximately 100 yds. West of the entrance to the Georgia Agrirama east to approximately 100 yds. West of the I-75 exit (southbound). An additional 15 feet of R/W north of existing will be required between the Georgia Agrirama entrance and 100 yards west of the I-75 exit ramp. The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and agreed upon by the Federal Highway Administration, State Historic Preservation Officer and State Archaeologist. These guidelines outline general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
