Abstract

Training Area 42; Area: 140 ha (347 ac); Number of Sites: 21; Number of Occurrences: 10. Site Density: 1/6.7 ha (16.5 ac); Cultural Resource Density: 1/4.5 ha (11.2 ac). Training Area 42 shares its southern border with TA 41's northern border--Gibson Road. Harlem Road and Boggy Gut Creek provide the eastern and western borders, respectively, and the military base boundary forms the northern border. We surveyed only the central south section of TA 42, since SAS surveyed the remaining area on a previous project (Braley and Price 1991). The present survey parcel does not include the Boggy Gut Creek terrace or any ridge noses descending onto the terrace. The survey does include survey of both sides of a second order tributary (southern portion) and the southeast side of a first order tributary (northern portion). The entire parcel generally consists of two main ridges; the southern ridge lies in Richmond County and the northern ridge lies in Columbia County. Prehistoric and historic sites concentrate along the second order drainage southern terrace and its tributary drainage/spring heads, immediately west of Harlem Road. Upland areas are sparsely vegetated with pines mixed with an upland scrub understory. Drainage margins consist of mostly deciduous vegetation. Dirt roads and east - west firebreaks spaced at 200 m intervals provided surface inspection. Five structures that lie within the survey parcel appear on the 1941 aerial photograph. We recorded all structures with site numbers: 9RI819, 9RI824, 9RI830, 9CB163, and 9CB166. The 1916 Richmond County soil survey map depicts one structure that also appears on the aerial photograph (9RI830).
