Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BRZLB-0111(5), Fannin County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify, and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with “GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines” developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and agreed upon by the Federal Highway Administration, State Historic Preservation Officer and State Archaeologist. These guidelines outline general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.

GDOT Project BRZLB-111(5), Fannin County is the proposed replacement of the existing one-lane structure over Little Fightingtown Creek on County Road 169 (project location map attached). The existing structure was constructed circa 1962 by the County and consists of a single timber span with masonry abutments. It will be replaced on existing location with a double 10 foot by 9 foot culvert. An archaeological survey conducted in accordance with GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines failed to reveal any evidence of archaeological resources within the area of impact.
