Abstract

Project PR-91(101) Echols County, would improve CR 81 by grading, drainage, base and paving. This project was originally surveyed and cleared for construction by GDOT archaeologists in 1996. The project designed has recently changed to include an additional .6628 west of the CR 82 and CR 81 intersection, and a realignment on new location near the CR 82 and CR 81 intersection. The project now begins .628 west of CR 82, ends .405 east of CR 82, and has a length of 1.033 km. This project would construct a 7.2 m paved roadway using the existing dirt road except around the intersection of CR 81 and 82 where the alignment will shift north on new location for a total of 366m before returning to the existing dirt road. Approximately 18.3 m of proposed right of way would be required.

An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with GDOT/FHWA Cultural resource survey guidelines developed by the GDOT staff archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section staff and concurred in by the federal highway administration and state historic preservation officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.

No existing or eligible National register of archaeological resources were located within the project’s area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
