Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, projects MR-4300(1) and MR-4303(1), Emanuel County have been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. The proposed projects would widen and reconstruct Old Nunez Road and Meadow lake Parkway south of Swainsboro. Project MR-4300(1) would begin at the intersection of Meadow lake Parkway. Then would extend northerly along existing Old Nunez Road ending at the intersection of Moring Road. Additional rights-of-way would be required for Moring Road intersect ion improvements. The proposed project would be approximately 0.95 miles in length. Project MR-4303(1) would begin at the intersection of Old Nunez Road then would extend easterly along existing Meadow lake Parkway for a distance of 2 miles before tying into SR4 at the intersection of SR4 and Meadow lake Parkway. No additional rights-of-way would be required. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was surveyed for the entire length of the combined project corridors. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
