Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, projects FR-009-2(72) & (74) and BHF-009-2(73), Bryan and Chatham Counties have been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. The proposed projects would reconstruct and widen US17/ SR25 in Bryan and Chatham Counties. The projects as proposed would begin at a point approximately 0.33 miles northeast of I-95 in Bryan County then would extend northeasterly along existing US17/ SR25 to the overflow bridge approximately 0.4 miles northeast of the Ogeechee River in Chatham County. As part of the proposed projects a new parallel bridge would be constructed over the CSX Railroad. In addition, a new parallel bridge would be constructed west of the existing bridge over the Ogeechee River. Existing rights-of-way varies from 75 to 295 feet. Additional rights-of-way would vary from approximately 35 feet to a maximum of 135 feet, with construction remaining within the existing rights-of-way over much of the project. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was surveyed for the entire 9.8 mile length of the combined projects.
